Good luck to M and GP, have fun gents
I was interested in your discussion on game rules, and the fact that neither of you think targeting the gen is worth while

Yes, I think most in the community would take this view, which is why rules with "No General Sniping" are so popular.
However, the reason I personally prefer MRS to SR rules is that the General -can- be killed by artillery, at long range, because the game will allow and determine this outside of the players direct commands.
I know I keep banging on about this but its just so important. There is no point, in my view, creating a situation where players will have passionate arguments when the mechanics of the game are the cause of the problem being discussed.
GP, DougieJ & Gunner24 all of whom are playing campaigns versus myself should know that I never ever personally target a General with artillery, but I almost -always- set my artillery to auto fire in the early part of the game when I'm looking for some cheap early kills and am otherwise usually occupied in manoeuvre of infantry units. Artillery on auto fire will preferentially target any enemy General in range, its just the way it is.

M and myself had a discussion on arty sniping of gen with the conclusion that its not an honourable thing to do, i absolutely stand by that and I'm sure all you guys do to.
Just out of curiosity i was wondering what the technical effect of losing a gen in battle is

I.E. how serious an effect it has on your troops morale.
My experience says it can be quite a devastating event.
Empirical evidence suggests its equivalent to a morale hit across the whole army. How the mechanics of this work is not absolutely known nor obvious, but some hints from CA in some of the forums suggests that it starts as a pretty nasty morale hit immediately the General is killed (could we guess at 1-2 morale points across the whole army?...maybe with a random element thrown in?) then tapers off with time.
If this is true it would explain why losing your General at the critical moments in a battle is so devastating....your troops are probably already tired and shaken, a morale hit of 1-2 points at this stage will crack the whole army. If you lose your General very early in the game, which sometimes happens due to a stray roundshot, the effect is usually barely noticeable. Your army doesn't rout and I have found the long term effects on army morale to be negligible.

In mine and Guns last battle for example, after taking out my gen with a sneak cav attack, Gun was able to cause an unstoppable chain rout of my still substantial force using 3 units of lights that had run out of ammo.
I saw this battle. Very surprising result eh? At the late game stage all you need to do it convince a few units to start to rout and the nearby units become shaken by that and rout also. I'm not sure it would have worked quite as well if your General has been killed 20 minutes earlier.

What I'm thinking is that for players interested only in winning that targeting the gen would be a very worth while tactic indeed.
Only if he is killed at precisely the right moment. I'm almost completely certain that after 5 minutes or so the after effects of a Generals death are negligible. It -may- be that there is a permanent 1 point loss of morale across all units, but its not obvious.
Moo.
