In mine and Guns last battle for example, after taking out my gen with a sneak cav attack, Gun was able to cause an unstoppable chain rout of my still substantial force using 3 units of lights that had run out of ammo.

The sneak Cavalry attack was from woods about 10 miles away !...hehehe.

What I'm thinking is that for players interested only in winning that targeting the gen would be a very worth while tactic indeed.

Agreed Dougie, this has always been a "problem".....between us, it's no problem at all, but many will take great pleasure in killing the General with artillery fire - with or without a rule....but I admit it's not so bad nowdays as a long time ago, at one point (a year or more ago) my General used to get killed in well over 50% of games by artillery fire in the early part of the game, and, yes, he was safely in the rear, thankfully that does not happen much now days.

I was interested in your discussion on game rules, and the fact that neither of you think targeting the gen is worth while :?:

Yes, I think most in the community would take this view, which is why rules with "No General Sniping" are so popular.

However, the reason I personally prefer MRS to SR rules is that the General -can- be killed by artillery, at long range, because the game will allow and determine this outside of the players direct commands.

I know I keep banging on about this but its just so important. There is no point, in my view, creating a situation where players will have passionate arguments when the mechanics of the game are the cause of the problem being discussed.

GP, DougieJ & Gunner24 all of whom are playing campaigns versus myself should know that I never ever personally target a General with artillery, but I almost -always- set my artillery to auto fire in the early part of the game when I'm looking for some cheap early kills and am otherwise usually occupied in manoeuvre of infantry units. Artillery on auto fire will preferentially target any enemy General in range, its just the way it is.

M and myself had a discussion on arty sniping of gen with the conclusion that its not an honourable thing to do, i absolutely stand by that and I'm sure all you guys do to.
Just out of curiosity i was wondering what the technical effect of losing a gen in battle is :?: I.E. how serious an effect it has on your troops morale.
My experience says it can be quite a devastating event.

Empirical evidence suggests its equivalent to a morale hit across the whole army. How the mechanics of this work is not absolutely known nor obvious, but some hints from CA in some of the forums suggests that it starts as a pretty nasty morale hit immediately the General is killed (could we guess at 1-2 morale points across the whole army?...maybe with a random element thrown in?) then tapers off with time.

If this is true it would explain why losing your General at the critical moments in a battle is so devastating....your troops are probably already tired and shaken, a morale hit of 1-2 points at this stage will crack the whole army. If you lose your General very early in the game, which sometimes happens due to a stray roundshot, the effect is usually barely noticeable. Your army doesn't rout and I have found the long term effects on army morale to be negligible.

I saw this battle. Very surprising result eh? At the late game stage all you need to do it convince a few units to start to rout and the nearby units become shaken by that and rout also. I'm not sure it would have worked quite as well if your General has been killed 20 minutes earlier.

Only if he is killed at precisely the right moment. I'm almost completely certain that after 5 minutes or so the after effects of a Generals death are negligible. It -may- be that there is a permanent 1 point loss of morale across all units, but its not obvious.

Moo.

Yes this would explain a lot, as i was thinking back to another game where Gunner also got the better of me with a late charge (not that i take defeat badly and never get over it you understand  )
In this game i had taken out Guns gen quite early , but he was still able to
cause my forces to rout and win the day.
So lose your gen early and it need not be the disaster i suspected.

This is most interesting, and I agree with all the above, from what I've seen in the past.

Here it is. As follows:

- All 40 strength units are made up of 20+10+10 = 40
- All 20 strength units are made up of 10+10 = 20

Please let me know if I've made an obvious error.

Cheers,
M.

Hello guys, sorry but the wiki page has got badly corrunpted and I'm UNable to fix it, even going back and using an old page via the history.

I think it was caused by adding a LINE into a grid, best not to add anything other than what is already on the page.....Moopere, could you take a look and see if it's possible to fix, if not I will have to RE_BUILD the whole page from fresh, what a pain.

OK, it seems I managed to fix it by going way back in the history.....please take care updating the page, PLEASE don't add stuff (line etc) onto the page EXCEPT simple text instruction/orders in the places provided.

the wiki can be so frustrating at time, mostly very good, but sometimes very, very bad !.

All right G24, noted.
Yet I don't remember having added something not usual.

I suppose you talk about the "player comments" grid?

Yes, I think a LINE was added in there which upset the wiki, no idea why it should but that was the only thing I could fine that looked like it caused the trouble.....all ok now.

Yet another interesting CB battle, I was flying over the batlefield in my helicopter wishing I were down on the ground trying to make headway against the Spanish Artillery....Moopere does like his artillery !.

For me the key to this battle was on the Austrian far left, whichever side I had been fighting for that is where I would have gone in force, and Moopere did, and won, so I think it's fair to say too many troops were sucked into the meat grinder in the centre.

Yes, I do :)

I find the Spanish quite interesting from an artillery point of view. Having both 12lb and 8lb guns available is an interesting combination. The 8lb units are quite cheap yet they have a decent range.

Is it just me or do snowy maps affect artillery? Whenever I play on snow I swear my artillery seems to shoot into the ground a lot, usually only a few feet from the muzzle of the gun. I think maybe 20-30% of all shots fired in this game suffered this....watching the replay it looks to me like GP's artillery had similar problems.

Yes, I agree. The ground in that corridor was literally carpeted wall to wall with bodies!

The dynamics of a battle are funny sometimes though. There was no particular reason that both GP and I both fed the grinder there except that the corridor between the buildings could potentially allow an enemy to split your force if we continued to have the rest of the army positioned as we both did, otherwise the little town was not really an interesting battlefield feature. Sometimes I guess the 'prize' is of no inherent value except to deny the enemy the same prize.

Cheers, M.
